Simple Dessert Shopping Tips

There are so many varieties of chocolate on the shelves today it can be overwhelming to pick one – as a general rule of thumb, the fewer the ingredients, the better the chocolate.

Simple Dessert Cooking Tips

10 Best Desserts to Take to a Holiday Party

'Tis the season for holiday parties and all the sweet indulgences that come along with them. Have you volunteered to bring dessert to your next gathering?

Here are ten of our favorites that travel well and are sure to please everyone at the party.

1 Chocolate Peppermint Swiss Roll: Oohs and ahhs may result from unveiling this chocolate-covered Swiss roll at a party—and continue once people bite into this light-as-a cloud, minty-sweet concoction.

2 Christmas Crack: Made with saltine crackers, cracked into pieces, and sort of addictive – this Christmas Crack lives up to its name on all counts. They come together quickly (though allow time for them to set) and are very shareable.

3 Rum Balls: Hand-held treats are made for holiday dessert tables. These no-bake rum balls can be made several days ahead, which makes life easier and also deepens the flavors.

4 Chocolate Chip Cookies: If you are pressed for time, chocolate chip cookies are always a winner. Few people can turn them down. These chocolate chip cookies are a little special—some milk powder mixed into the batter does wonders makes them soft and chewy.

5 Eggnog Pound Cake: This cake is suffused with the flavors of the season—brandy, nutmeg, and cinnamon, plus cranberry and orange. Bonus: Any leftovers can be eaten for breakfast.

6 Sweet Potato Pie with Pecan Topping: Pie is so hard to resist, and this is one loaded with pecans, a sweet caramel sauce, and sweet potatoes.

7 Flourless Lemon Almond Cake: Here’s a bit of an antidote to excessive sweetness we encounter around the holidays. There’s something so appealing about citrus this time of year, too. This cake will appeal to those who need to avoid gluten.

8 Triple Ginger Gingerbread Cake: Ginger lovers, take note! With fresh, powdered, and candied ginger, this cake is both sweet and spicy.

9 Pumpkin Bars with Streusel Topping: This dessert is ready to travel! The caramel sauce that goes over the top just before serving puts it, well, over the top. And that’s what the holidays are all about.

10 Caramel Apple Monkey Bread: Don’t let the phrase “monkey bread” put you off. Trust us, it's delicious. This pull-apart bread will satisfy a whole crowd—you literally pull away small pieces of sticky sweet dough and eat them. It's loaded with apple cider caramel and baked apples, and nearly as rich as cake!

Recipes:
Peanut Butter Brownies
½ cup butter, unsalted
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
⅓ cup brown sugar
⅔ cup white sugar
2 eggs
½ tsp kosher salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
⅓ cup flour
⅓ cup cocoa powder
¼ tsp baking powder
¼ cup peanut butter (natural, creamy)
1 tbsp powdered sugar

In a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips and butter. Mix well then remove from heat and set aside.
In another bowl, mix eggs until frothy then add the sugars. Mix again and then add kosher salt, and vanilla extract. Give it another mix and then add the cooled chocolate mixture into the bowl.
Sprinkle in the baking powder, flour, and cocoa powder and mix just until combined.
Pour batter into an 8࡮ baking pan lined with parchment paper.
Drizzle the peanut butter mixed with powdered sugar and swirl into the batter.
Bake at 350 for 20-22 minutes. Remove and cool completely. Enjoy!!

Strawberry snacking cake
4 tablespoons butter, room temp
½ cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp lemon zest
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ½ cup all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ tsp kosher salt
⅔ cup milk
1 ½ cups strawberries, cut (divided)

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Scrape the bowl and add an egg. Mix well and then add the lemon zest and vanilla extract. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and kosher salt. Mix well and then alternate adding the flour and the milk into the batter. After the final addition of flour, add 1 cup of cut strawberries and mix just until combined. Make sure you don’t over mix.
Pour the batter into an 8࡮ pan lined with parchment paper and smooth out. With the leftover ½ cup of strawberries, put it on top of the cake to “decorate”. Sprinkle it with 1 tbsp of sugar and bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. *This cake can go from perfectly done to overbaked really quick so err on the side of underbaking by a minute or two. I would check it at 30 minutes with a toothpick and see how it goes from there. If the top is looking golden brown, that’s also a great indication that it’s ready.

It’s no secret that dark chocolate and avocado are 2 very nutritious superfoods. So what happens when we join these two super healthy foods? A very happy marriage. Recipe here.

The majority of recipes use one of these two. Both must be whipped in order to make a light filling, then folded into the egg yolks and mascarpone. However, each will contribute a different flavor. Egg whites will make the batter more airy, while heavy cream will add richness. One thing to consider is that egg whites are usually used raw.

In today’s recipe, I use heavy cream. Not only do I choose it because – let’s be honest – heavy cream and I are best friends, but I prefer my desserts to be as rich as possible.

In order to use egg whites instead of heavy cream, simply omit the cream and use 3 egg whites instead. Whisk them using an electric mixture until stiff peaks form, then fold them into the mascarpone-egg yolk mixture. Since the eggs are used raw, be sure to use the freshest eggs possible with intact shells.

2-Ingredient Dessert Recipes You’ll Definitely Want to Make Tonight

If you were born with a sweet tooth, you know what it’s like to get a late-night sugar craving, to plot your dessert when you’re still eating breakfast, and to salivate through the pastry department when you make your grocery runs. And if you like to make your desserts from scratch, you might get a little overeager in the baking-supplies department. Chances are you don’t really need that second bottle of sprinkles, right? But what if we told you you could make a decadent dessert with merely two ingredients?

If you want to keep it simple every once in a while, we recommend these two-ingredient desserts. They’re easy, fast, and delicious, and they won’t require you to pull every last baking supply down from your cabinet to make them. (Seriously!)

And when you’re ready, you can level-up to three-ingredient desserts.

2-ingredient chocolate cake

One egg and melted chocolate later, and you have yourself a truly decadent, gluten-free chocolate cake.

2-ingredient coconut bites

For a guiltless sweet treat, opt for these coconut bites made with just shredded coconut and chocolate.

2-ingredient Nutella puff pastry

What’s a dessert roundup without Nutella? The Food Charlatan’s Nutella puff pastry is easy to make, too just wrap a dollop of Nutella into puff pastry.

2-ingredient cake batter truffles

What’s even easier than making a two-ingredient dessert? Making a two-ingredient dessert that requires zero baking, like Sweet C’s cake batter truffles. All you need are yellow or white cake mix, one stick of melted butter, and, if you want a pop of color, sprinkles.

White hot chocolate

This white hot chocolate really is as easy to make as it sounds. Combine white chocolate and warm milk for a sweet and soothing sipper.

2-ingredient peanut butter-caramel dip

Crunchy peanut butter and caramel sundae sauce come together to make a dip that will make you eager to eat your fruit &mdash apple slices, frozen bananas, you name it!

2-ingredient cherry pie bites

Store-bought phyllo cups make quick work of a batch of cherry mini-pie bites. Top them with whipped cream if you feel like going all in with a third ingredient, or keep things simple.

Cookies & Cream Oreo bark

Cookies and cream Oreo bark is a treat so simple the kids can help make it. Keep it for yourself or pack it up in a cute tin and give it as a gift.

2-ingredient “Pop Tarts”

You don’t need to buy Pop Tarts at the store when it’s so easy to make them at home! Piecrust and jam are all you need. If you do have the extra time (or the craving for even more sweetness), you can drizzle on some simple homemade icing, too.

2-ingredient chocolate-covered macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts are luxe enough to taste like an indulgent treat when they’re simply covered with chocolate.
